A Note From Mr. Gneiser & Mr. Bazz,

Outdoor Lab School Principals

Dear Families and Students,

It is a sad time at each of our sites. They are empty when they should be filled with the laughter and joy of hundreds of sixth grade students. Unfortunately, we are unable to have students for the remainder of this school year and seven trips at each site have been cancelled. The district is looking into the opportunity of making up an experience for these students next year, but no decisions have been made at this time.

As always, we appreciate your support of the Outdoor Lab schools.

Congratulations to the recipients of Outdoor Lab Foundation's High School Leader Scholarships. “Outdoor Lab is such a special program which provides a unique opportunity for kids to get away from the countless distractions in life," Nicole says. "[Outdoor Lab] allows for genuine connections and bonds to be formed through laughter and pure happiness!” Nicole felt honored and ecstatic when she heard she received the scholarship. Next, she plans to attend Montana State University to major in Environmental Engineering.

Name: Kenzie O’Neil
High School: Columbine

“I will always remember the relationships I built with the students, leaders, interns and faculty at Outdoor Lab," Kenzie says. "It was amazing being able to learn and teach in one of the most beautiful places.” Upon finding out she was selected, Kenzie felt excited and blessed to have help towards her college career. I grew up in the Allegheny Mountains of Western PA and I spent every day as a kid out in the woods, I feel like kids today rarely get that experience and that Outdoor Lab can help kids really connect with nature and the environment. As an avid skier, mountain biker and hiker myself, I feel that the more that we can get kids off of screens and into nature, the better off they will be."

Did You Know? Impact Your Favorite Nonprofit While Filing Taxes This Year

Safeway's Community Commitment

The 2020 CARE ACT made changes to charitable donations. Changes that make it easier to give back!

Earn a $300 per taxpayer above-the-line deduction of cash contributions to nonprofits and other charitable organizations for 2020—even if you cannot itemize!

Individuals will have no adjusted gross income (AGI) limit on charitable contributions for 2020. For example, if you have $100,000 of AGI, you could give, in cash, up to $100,000 and deduct it this year, essentially wiping out your AGI. This is not a common strategy, but for those that sold a business or had another large, taxable event occur in 2020, a large charitable gift could make sense.

Corporations also had their charitable contribution limits raised from 10 % of taxable income to 25 % of taxable income for 2020.

These provisions encourage individuals to continue charitable donations to help nonprofits as unemployment and financial strain rises. Of course, be sure to consult your tax advisor to understand how this may be able to aid your philanthropic interests and give back to your favorite local organization(s).

Safeway, a long-time supporter of OLF, recognizes the important role grocery stores play in supporting the community. During this unprecedented time, Safeway's working with local food banks to raise funds in April to provide relief for those in the community suffering from the current crisis.

As an essential business, Safeway is also taking steps to ensure the safety of their customers and employees:

  • Stores will limit the number of customers inside to 30% of capacity, implement a one-way movement in aisles and display floor decals to remind customers to remain six feet apart
  • Dedicated shopping times for senior citizens and immune-compromised shoppers: Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m.
  • Plexiglass partitions installed in all checkout lanes
  • Enhanced store cleaning and disinfecting
  • Employees have been provided masks and are conducting health checks daily
  • Contact-free delivery and Drive-Up & Go services available, as well as free delivery of prescriptions
