An inside look at Colorado Gives Day
Shannon Hancock, Executive Director
Seven years ago, I started my job with Outdoor Lab Foundation, just six days before Colorado Gives Day. This scrappy non-profit had just hired their first employee (me) and on day one I walked into a room full of dedicated volunteers who were trying to piece together spreadsheets of name and figure out how to keep Outdoor Lab open for another year. We compiled a spreadsheet by midnight that day (LONG first day, right??) and by the end of the next day we had created a postcard and a letter letting people know about Outdoor Lab and it’s needs. On Colorado Gives day, I spent the entire day with my cohort, Brad, on the computer watching the generosity of our community flow in.
Thankfully, we have more time than that these days. Outdoor Lab is open and thriving and we just get to talk about the many needs our kids, the sites and our dedicated staff have to make this program innovative and thriving. Even more special, our donors are ready to help and want to hear about what the program needs to excel.
But, that feeling of overwhelming gratitude hasn’t changed. Our Marketing Manager, Katie Evereth says, “Colorado Gives Day is like Christmas for Colorado nonprofits. It’s the one day a year that we get to see all the generosity from our community pour in. All these donations go to a program so unique and special to our state, it makes nonprofit work even more rewarding (if that’s possible!).”
At the end of the day, you don’t get to see the behind the scenes work. One of my favorite parts of the day is when a donor learns what a huge impact their domination really has on just a single student. For me, it makes everything we do so real. It’s really touching when the sites let us know how much more they were able to do for our kids because of you.
And one more note, I thought you should know…on this Colorado Gives Day, seven years later, YOU helped Outdoor Lab receive more than $34,000 in ONE single day, making this our biggest Colorado Gives Day yet. THANK YOU
